Cobh Ramblers and Finn Harps were the most notable casualties of the FAI Cup third round this evening as they both fell to First Division opposition.

Given their troubles this season, Cobh's 2-0 defeat at Sporting Fingal was hardly unexpected but with little or no form to speak of, Athlone's 2-1 win over Finn Harps could rejuvenate their season.

Elsewhere, a place in the next round proved a bridge too far for all the the non-league sides still involved at this stage apart from Killester United, who battled to earn a replay against Wexford Youths.

Goals from John Paul Kelly and Jason Byrne (2) helped Bohemians ease past Drogheda Town while Liffeys Pearse went down 2-0 at the Brandywell. Douglas Hall were unable to match Drogheda United, losing 3-0.
