Finn Harps manager Paul Hegarty has signed a new three-year deal with the promoted Donegal side, ending speculation which has linked him with the vacant position at Derry City.

The former Harps player said his aim is to build a team capable of competing in the top division rather than simply surviving in the top flight.

"We will have a real go and try to do something positive," said Hegarty who also hopes to sign a number of new players.

Harps also intend to sign a number of players on a full-time basis next season as the club's overall budget is increased.

Hegarty had been linked with the Derry job after former Hearts manager John Robertson left the job last week and returned to Scotland.

Former Dunfermline and Derry manager Stephen Kenny was also linked with a return back to the Brandywell.
