Suarez took just 16 minutes to make his impact on Anfield as the new €26 million striker came off the bench to score Liverpool's second goal in a 2-0 win over Stoke City.

After Raul Meireles's 47th-minute opener Suarez, in his first match for two months following his deadline-day arrival from Ajax Amsterdam, joined the fray in the 63rd minute.

Soon afterwards he rounded Amir Begovic after Dirk Kuyt’s pass and rolled the ball goalwards. For a few seconds it appeared Wilkinson would cut out the shot but his desperate clearance came back off the post and bounced over the line.

Third-placed Manchester City's outside title hopes suffered another setback as they could draw 2-2 only at Birmingham City.

They are now eight points behind leaders Manchester United from a game more while Tottenham Hotspur closed back to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea as Peter Crouch's early goal earned them a 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers.
