DERBY MANAGER Jim Smith has dismissed claims that Paul McGrath's future with the club hangs on the next two games. The 37-year-old Republic of Ireland defender wants another season in the English Premiership, but Smith has denied that McGrath is on trial as the season comes towards a close.
"I would not insult Paul by thinking along those lines," Smith said yesterday. "Even to suggest it is absolutely ridiculous. The decision will be taken by me and anything Paul does in the next two matches will not affect it. In fact, he may not play in both of them."
Despite continued problems with his knees, McGrath has made 23 appearances since he was signed in October from Aston Villa for £100,000 which will double when Derby's Premiership survival is finally guaranteed.
