TO CELEBRATE the country’s biggest sporting organisation marking the 125th anniversary of its foundation yesterday, TG4 asked viewers and sports fans to vote for their favourite hurler and footballer of the last 25 years.

Over 104,000 viewers voted with Kilkenny’s Henry Shefflin voted the best hurler. DJ Carey came second, with Tipperary’s Nicky English third.

Kerry’s Jack O’Shea was voted best footballer, followed closely in second place by Tyrone’s Peter Canavan and Kerry midfielder Dara Ó Sé in third.

Meanwhile, Canavan’s club is at the centre of a disciplinary probe after Tyrone’s Division One league final was marred by violence.

Errigal Ciarán and Carrickmore finished level after extra-time, but players from both sides were involved in a mass brawl immediately after the end of normal time at Healy Park.
