Newcastle last night moved to quell growing speculation that £15 million striker Alan Shearer is set to leave the club.

Freddie Fletcher spoke out after a fresh spate of stories linking the England skipper with potential transfers to Premiership leaders Aston Villa, Chelsea and Italian giants Inter Milan.

"I can't believe the number of stories suggesting Alan Shearer is leaving Newcastle," said Fletcher.

"He is not in talks with any other club. He is not for sale. He is not going anywhere.

Villa manager John Gregory is believed to have set up talks with the player's adviser Tony Stephens after tonight's UEFA Cup first-round clash with Stromsgodset at Villa Park.
