RENAULT, the French car manufacturer whose engines have powered Williams and Benetton teams to the last four constructors world championships, announced yesterday that they are to withdraw from Formula One at the end of 1997.

Renault's decision will spark a major battle for new engine suppliers among the top teams. Japanese car builder Honda is widely expected to return to Formula One.

Renault made their announcement in Paris where Renault sport president Patrick Faure confirmed one of Formula One's hottest rumours of recent weeks. In a statement, he said Renault had set itself the goal of adding this year's world title to the seven it has already won.
