Pembroke repeat feat against Clontarf

MEN'S HOCKEY ROUND-UP:TWO WEEKS ago they put seven goals past Clontarf in the first round of the Irish Senior Cup and, on Saturday, Pembroke Wanderers repeated the feat when the teams met in the Leinster League.

Their 7-1 win put them a point clear at the top of the table, and they are division one’s only unbeaten side. Maurice Elliott helped himself to a hat-trick in the game, with five of the goals coming after the break.

YMCA suffered their first defeat of the league campaign, dropping from first to fourth in the table, Robbie McFarlane’s double and further scores from Richard Sykes and Lee Cole giving Monkstown a 4-0 victory that lifted them into second place.

Glenanne stay level on points with Monkstown, with an inferior goal difference, after beating Three Rock Rovers 5-4, surviving a late fight-back from the visitors for whom Peter Blakeney scored a hat-trick. Three second half goals gave Corinthian a 3-1 win over UCD, while Railway Union had a 5-1 victory over Fingal, Eoin MacArthur scoring a hat-trick.

Over in Antwerp, Banbridge and Cookstown both bowed out of the Euro Hockey league, Cookstown losing 5-0 to Reading and 10-1 to Amsterdam, while Banbridge put up a brave battle against UHC Hamburg yesterday before losing 5-3 – that result, added to their 4-3 loss to Montrouge left them bottom of the pool.
