Rio 2016: Irish in action Day 14

Rob Heffernan competes in the 50km road race while the women’s golf continues

12:00pm - Athletics

Ireland have three representatives in the 50km race walk, Robert Heffernan, Alex Wright and Brendan Boyce. Heffernan is the most decorated of the three and has the best chance of finishing on the podium, and is taking part in his fifth Olympic Games. The 38-year-old Corkman already has one Olympic medal - he was belatedly awarded the bronze medal from London after race winner Sergey Kirdyapkin was retrospectively suspended for doping offences. He has had an injury-affected year but still managed a fifth place finish in the World Championships. Boyce finished in 29th place in London while Wright is making his Olympic bow after failing to qualify four years ago.

4.00pm - Modern Pentathlon

Ireland's Natalya Coyle lies in 12th position after the first day of the Modern Pentathlon in Rio. Coyle, who is looking to improve on her ninth place finish in the London Olympics four years ago, scored 214 after a marathon opening fencing session. The women's competition reaches its climax on Friday with the final three events taking place throughout the day. First up is a 200m freestyle swim at 4.00pm, and Coyle is in the fourth heat of six. That is then followed by showjumping at 7.30pm with a combination of a 3km run and 10m shooting bringing things to a conclusion at 10pm.

12.41pm - Golf

After a poor start Ireland's competitors in the women's competition enjoyed fine second rounds in Rio, with world amateur number one Leona Maguire particularly impressive as she shot a six under par 65 on a low scoring day. Maguire carded seven birdies and dropped just a single shot on Thursday as she moved up the leaderboard and reignited her medal hopes. She tees off at 1.36pm on Friday.Meanwhile Stephanie Meadow also enjoyed a fine second day, shooting a 65 which dragged her to one over par for the competition and into a share of 38th place after a disappointing 77 on Wednesday. Her final round gets underway at 12.41pm.
