Mark Webber recovering after frightening crash in Brazil

Mark Webber is to return home later this week after being involved in a frightening crash in Brazil he admits he cannot recall.

Webber is under observation at a local hospital in Sao Paulo after sustaining bruising and concussion from the smash in the six-hour World Endurance Championship event at Interlagos.

Towards the end of the race the 38-year-old Australian lost control of his Porsche and suffered a huge impact into a barrier, which also accounted for Ferrari’s Matteo Cressoni.

At present Porsche are uncertain as to the cause of the accident, but Webber is at least on the mend even if he has no idea what happened.

Via his website the 12-year Formula One veteran, who quit the sport at the end of last season to take up sports cars, said: “I’m quite sore, am pretty bruised and have a stinking headache.

“I’ve no recollection of the accident or how it happened. The team is looking into the details to find out more.

“Thanks to the medical team at the track and here at the hospital who did a great job and are looking after me very well.”

Despite the crash, Webber added: “On a positive note it’s great the boys in car number 14 (Romain Dumas, Neel Jani, Marc Lieb) managed to bring home the victory which is a fantastic way to finish off the season.

“I’m already looking forward to getting out there again next year.”
