Charlie Smyth “solidified his place in franchise lore”, according to the New Orleans Saints, after he scored a 56-yard field goal and converted a rare onside kick on a dream NFL debut against the Miami Dolphins.
His team ultimately lost the game 21-18, but they almost made a comeback with a big impact from Smyth, who finally got his chance after moving to NFL from GAA early last year.
Smyth’s opportunity came after the Saints released experienced kicker Blake Grupe after a disappointing year in New Orleans. The American went 18-of-26 on field goals, missing two kicks recently, and the Down native was more than ready to take his chance.
“The way the game was going [with the Saints trailing 16-0 at halftime], we needed two two-point conversions if we scored a touchdown, so you were curious if the opportunity was going to come up,” Smyth said. “Ultimately, you just have to stay ready.”

“Whenever you’re in that situation, those juices flow,” he said. “You just can’t replicate that when you’re kicking on your own. Whenever you get that, it’s all about fuelling that into something that’s going to be a positive impact on you. I use it to swing harder.
“The boys had a great operation and I’m just happy to be able to knock it down.”
When Smyth heard he would be playing, he spread the news to some friends and family back home. He found out in just enough time for his parents and two sisters to join him for his NFL debut.
“I think if we had had to wait, like, three or four more hours, I don’t think it would have been possible,” he said. “I think they’re travelling 23 hours. It was awesome to see them there.”
Videos on social media showed the reaction in Mayobridge when Smyth nailed the kick.
“I told a few people at home when I found out, and there was a watch party in the pub. I think any time I scored, there was free pints for everybody!”
