Katie Taylor to open title defence on Tuesday

First Irish in action at the Women’s World Boxing Championships on Monday morning

None of the four Irish fighters in South Korea were drawn to compete today (Sunday) in the first session of the Women's World Championships, which began this morning (Irish time) in the Halla Gymnasium on Jeju Island.

Reigning Olympic and world champion Katie Taylor, who is ranked number one, gloves off on Tuesday morning with her session beginning at 10.00am Irish time.

The Irish champion, who received a first round bye, faces Dominica’s lightweight Valerian Spicer.

Irish bantamweight Michaela Walsh and featherweight Joanne Lambe also received first round byes with welterweight Claire Grace the only Irish boxer involved in the first round proper.

Belfast's Walsh, a finalist in this year's Commonwealth Games, where she was defeated by British Olympic gold medal winner Nicola Adams, meets Jamaican boxer Sarah Joy Rae in Tuesday's session, which begins at 5.00am Irish time.

Lambe meets China’s Qoing Lu in the Monday morning session, while welterweight Grace faces Romania’s Christina Stangu in her first round bout also on Monday morning.
