This day in golf history . . . On July 29th, 1957, Betsy Rawls shot 299 to win her third US Women's Open by six strokes over a par-73 course at Winged Foot. As it happened, Jacqueline Pung of San Francisco shot a better aggregate of 298 but was disqualified for signing for a wrong score at the fourth hole. Though the actual total was correct, she signed for a five where she had a six. By way of compensation, Winged Foot members contributed an unofficial purse exceeding $3,000 to recompense Pung for the $1,800 first prize she had lost.
