Newcastle United 1 West Brom 2Newcastle were made to pay the price for missed chances as they were dumped out of the League Cup by First Division West Brom. Substitute Lee Hughes snatched victory for the underdogs 11 minutes into extra time after Laurent Robert had cancelled out Shola Ameobi's first-half own goal.

Newcastle outplayed the visitors in the first half yet failed to force the ball past Russell Hoult. Hoult was due some credit for that but he twice needed the help of the woodwork as Lomana LuaLua headed against the crossbar and then Ameobi hit an upright.

West Brom opted for one from the training ground when they won a 29th-minute corner, and Thomas Gaardsoe did his bit at the near post to flick on Artim Sakiri's delivery. But if Newcastle were guilty of allowing Gaardsoe to play his part, Ameobi could do little as the ball cannoned off his leg and into the back of the net.

Newcastle pinned the visitors deep inside their own half after the restart and finally Hoult succumbed in the 65th minute. Robert played a one-two with Ameobi on the edge of the box before rifling to the net.
