FORMER substitute teacher Paul Goydos gave his rivals a lesson, when he emerged from the pack for a surprising one stroke victory at the $1.2 million Bay Hill Invitational golf tournament in Orlando yesterday.

Goydos, ranked 263rd in the world, outplayed the strongest field of the year with a closing five under par 67 on the Bay Hill course for his first PGA Tour victory. The Californian completed the final two rounds without a bogey to finish at 13 under 275.

Jeff Maggert was second, one stroke behind. Maggert, who shot a final round 69, sank a long birdie putt at the final hole to grab sole possession of second place at 12 under 276, while Tom Purtzer, who also shot 69, was another stroke back in third.
