TENNIS/Irish Junior Open Championships:A remarkable Irish record unlikely to be surpassed has been set at this week's Irish Junior Open Championships at the Fitzwilliam Club on Appian Way.

This standard has been established off the court by tournament referee Henry Lappin, who is in his 32nd year in charge.

Lappin took over from Irish icon and Davis Cup player Cyril Kemp.

On the court yesterday, there was a huge surprise when the top seed in the junior boys event, Darragh Glavin of the Naas club, lost to Ben Murray of the Passage East club, Waterford. In an absorbing struggle, the Waterford boy came through 6-1, 1-6, 7-6, (7-5).

The number two seed in the same series, Ross Campbell, of Belfast Boat Club, struggled to dismantle the challenge of Robert Bourke, a son of former Davis Cup player Tommy. Campbell dropped the middle set but won 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

The Hartnett brother and sister combination from Limerick had mixed luck. Frank beat Gerry O'Kelly in the minor singles, but Susan lost out to top seed Becky O'Hanlon of Castleknock 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
