Mourinho's Choice: Who will stay and who will go?

Full-backs

Mario Melchiot and Celestine Babayaro are both on the way out, with more experienced rivals required for Glen Johnson and Wayne Bridge. Roberto Carlos has been linked but Porto's Paulo Ferreira is a more convincing option.

Centre-backs

In John Terry and William Gallas, Chelsea have an excellent centre-back pairing, although Marcel Desailly is now past his prime and former Porto defender Jorge Andrade could now arrive instead. Robert Huth is a promising youngster and should be sent out on loan.

Central midfielders

While Frank Lampard has been Chelsea's best player this season and Scott Parker offers much promise, Mourinho must consider whether to keep Claude Makelele, Joe Cole and Geremi. Emmanuel Petit is out of contract, while Juan Sebastian Veron has been the biggest waste of money of all.

Porto's Costinha and Deco are options, while Steven Gerrard is highly rated, even if David Beckham and Ronaldino seem unlikely to come.

Wide midfielders

Chelsea have more left-wingers than the Labour Party these days, although Jesper Gronkjaer's days are numbered. Both Damien Duff and Arjen Robben are exciting talents, but a new right-sided midfielder is now needed.

Strikers

Mourinho's top priority is to find a world-class striker such as Andrei Shevchenko, Ronaldo or David Trezeguet. Fernando Morientes or Didier Drogba have also been courted. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is now past his prime, while Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo have not yet settled in the Premiership.
