Scotland's Colin Montgomerie now puts saving his marriage higher than winning prizes. Montgomerie was Europe's number one player for a record seven years until Englishman Lee Westwood's success last year.
The 37-year-old has played in five Ryder Cups including the successful European teams in 1995 and 1997. But he admitted yesterday that last year was his most miserable on tour as he and Eimear battled to save their 10-year marriage.
He said the relationship became a front as the pair continued "papering over the cracks". A brief separation, followed by a Caribbean holiday together, has led to renewed commitment on Montgomerie's part.
Montgomerie admitted he had learnt what he called a "painful but vital lesson". When asked what his goals for the year ahead would be, he replied instantly: "To stay married, for one, that would be good."
Montgomerie said he was relieved when Westwood knocked him off his perch.
He pointed out that last year was the first his career had dipped in 12 years. "I only won twice. Let's hope I can get back to improving from where I was. That's all I can say."
Montgomerie's 2001 season starts tomorrow in the Australian Masters at Huntingdale after a two-month break.
