BOXING:CHING-KUO Wu, the president of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), defeated Dubliner Pat McQuaid to be elected representative of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federation (ASOIF) on the International Olympic Committee Executive (IOC) Board in Quebec on Tuesday night.
Wu, of Chinese-Taipei, polled 20 votes. Switzerland-based Pat McQuaid, president of the International Cycling Union, and a former president of the Irish Cycling Federation, polled eight.
Wu, who was a guest of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association at the 2011 European Youth Championships in Dublin, said he was very proud to be elected. “The result of today’s election shows the trust from my International Federation colleagues who have witnessed the great success and credibility of AIBA and the development of the sport of boxing. I will continue to spend my time and efforts in AIBA, now additionally for the success of ASOIF, too.”
This nomination from ASOIF will have to be ratified by the IOC in London in July.
