RACING:TONY McCOY faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining suspected cracked ribs at Taunton yesterday. McCoy suffered a final-flight fall aboard Laudatory in the Steve Logan Memorial County Contractors Handicap Hurdle.
The 16-times champion jockey gave up his final ride of the day, Hopeful Start, in the totetrifecta Handicap Chase. A shaky-looking McCoy was later taken by ambulance on a stretcher to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
Clerk of the course Michael Trickey said: “He had some morphine and they’ve had a further look and taken him to hospital. “He has suspected cracked ribs.”
McCoy later confirmed he had sustained broken ribs. He tweeted: “Broke a few ribs so not too bad and hopefully back to work very soon. Just need the doctor to let me out of the hospital now and I’ll be happy.”
Menorah shrugged off a mistake at the last to land his first victory over fences in the toteexacta Novices’ Chase. The six-year-old was sent off the 1 to 4 favourite for his second try over fences after throwing away victory when unseating his rider at the second-last on his fencing bow.
He had both of his rivals toiling well behind coming to the final obstacle, but he met that fence all wrong and Johnson had to take some serious corrective measures on landing. Menorah got back on an even keel, though, and cantered home for a 13-length verdict over Royale’s Charter.
