David Matthews and Gareth Turnbull both claimed silver medals at the British AAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham yesterday although in highly different circumstances.
Matthews finished runner-up to England's Andy Hart over 800 meters yet was disappointed as half the six-man field tripped on the track three laps in. Gareth Turnbull came from behind on the last lap of the 1,500 metres to take second behind Northern Ireland's Eddie King. His time of three minutes 44.82 seconds represents another indoor best this season.
At the Scottish Junior Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Emily Maher won the 200 metres title breaking the Irish senior indoor record in a time of 24.15 seconds. Fellow Irish junior Ciara Sheehy took the silver. Maher came back later in the day to take the 60 metre title in 7.49 seconds.
Across the Atlantic in Johnson City, Tennessee, Susan Smith took silver over 60 metre hurdles. Her time of 8.30 seconds was a 0.12 second improvement on her own Irish indoor record and qualifies her for the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi next month.
