Badminton: Irish champion Chloe Magee had her qualification for the Olympic Games confirmed yesterday by her sport's governing body, the Badminton World Federation, the 23-year-old from Raphoe, Co Donegal making it into her second successive Games.

Magee is ranked at 44 in the world and is 26th on the list of 46 players who have qualified for the women’s singles’ event.

Along with her brother Sam, though, she must wait to see if they earn a spot in the mixed doubles’ tournament, the pair currently ranked as third reserves.

Dubliner Scott Evans is first reserve on the men’s singles’ list, the world number 67, who is ranked sixth in Europe, just missing out on automatic qualification.

“It is great we have three players in contention for Olympic selection,” said Badminton Ireland national coach Daniel Magee, a brother of Chloe and Sam. “Chloe and Sam have done great in mixed this year but it’s tough qualifying with just 16 pairs. Scott’s solid performances of late have ensured he has a great chance of selection.”
