England coach Kevin Keegan believes the past week of disciplinary controversy may actually have done the game a favour as he insisted: "It has to stop now."

Keegan believes that problems which needed addressing - such as dissent, mass brawls and confrontations with referees - have now been highlighted.

And he backed the FA's attempts to draw the game back into line by acting decisively against Leeds, Tottenham, Chelsea and Wimbledon, as well as seeking to stamp out dissent.

But Keegan stopped short of dropping Dennis Wise from his squad to face Argentina next week, even though the Chelsea captain is facing a misconduct charge for his alleged part in a tunnel fracas at Stamford Bridge, on the grounds that he is innocent until proven guilty.

Then again, picking any player without a blemish on his record is difficult these days. Even new recruits Steve Gerrard and Gareth Barry have been involved in controversy this season, with a red card against Everton and a club fine for breaking a curfew respectively.

The two teenagers certainly offer considerable promise though, and there was a sense of Keegan looking to youth as he omitted the likes of more established names such as Darren Anderton, Steve McManaman, Ian Walker, Teddy Sheringham and Paul Merson.

The focus at yesterday's press conference nevertheless remained on the recent spate of indiscipline, which began with Manchester United's displays of dissent and culminated in last weekend's brawls at Chelsea and Leeds, as well as Stan Collymore's excesses in Spain.

Keegan said: "Maybe this is the best favour that it can do the game. Maybe it needed addressing and fetching back in line. That's the way I see it."
