A JOCKEY celebrating his latest victory was shot and seriously wounded at a Budapest race track on Wednesday, police said yesterday.

The jockey, 32-year-old Csaba Lakatos, was an associate of Jozsef Prisztas, whom police have identified as one of the city's 10 leading organized crime figures. Prisztas was gunned down on November 1st.

The attack on Lakatos occurred Wednesday night. The jockey was shot in the head, back, and thigh. The shot to the head exited through Lakatos' cheek while the two remaining bullets were removed yesterday by doctors, who the state radio quoted as saying the jockey was out of danger.

Police have posted an around-the-clock guard at his hospital room, and were searching for the gunman.
