Golf:Raphael Jacquelin ended a four-year wait for his third European Tour title today. The 36-year-old took the Sicilian Open by one shot at Donnafugata after a duel with Anthony Wall that spilled into an extra day because of thunderstorms.
The pair resumed with six holes to play and, after twice drawing level, Wall’s double-bogey six at the 421-yard 17th cost him dear.
Without a victory since 2000 — 301 events ago — Wall came back with a closing birdie, but Jacquelin’s par made him the champion with a three-under-par 68 and 12-under aggregate of 272.
Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara dropped into a tie for third with Swede Joel Sjoholm after a double bogey at the last. England’s Jamie Elson was also seven under with three to play, but bogeyed the 16th and 18th to fall into an eight-way tie for fifth.
Jacquelin, whose lead had dropped from three to one just before the light ran out on Sunday, was caught when Wall resumed with a birdie two at the 13th. He birdied the next, only for Wall to get back on terms with a four at the long 16th. But then came the error which decided the issue.
Jacquelin said: “It was a good fight, but there’s only one winner and I am happy it’s me. I’ve played pretty well since 2007 and I feel I am still improving, even at 36, so maybe it’s time to win a bigger one.
“I was feeling a bit tired and Anthony put the pressure on me, but I made a good four on the last.”
Wall’s approach to the 17th came up just short and rolled away round the edge of a bunker into water.
“It’s a real shame for me,” he said. “But for one bad swing that was only half a bad swing I may have been the winner, but we pushed each other all the way and I’m pleased with my game.”
Lara, who drove into the water on the last, said: “It’s a positive week, but it’s always tough when you finish with a double.”
