Their pride hurt by the 3-1 defeat by Cork C of I on Sunday, Instonians generated a powerful recovery in a gripping finale to the all-Ireland club championship at Belfield yesterday, beating Pembroke Wanderers 5-2 to complete the cup and league double.

Although each side won one match in the three-way play-offs, reshuffled Instonians finished with a superior goal difference to take their place in Europe again - in the B division of the Champions Cup - while Three Rock Rovers find themselves heading for the A division of the Cup Winners' Cup.

Pembroke, encouraged at the outset by a superb double save by Nigel Henderson from the Cooke brothers, broke away for Simon Kershaw to give them the lead. But Instonians struck back for Jon Atkins and Paul Hollway to score clinically from short corners.

The Leinster champions, with resourceful play by Colin Kelly, still seemed capable of gaining the draw they needed as they levelled the scores (2-2) through a Stephen Stewart drag flick midway through the second half. But the defence cracked in the 59th and 60th minutes as Hollway (from a free by Neil Cooke) and Stephen Reid, set up by Mark Irwin, made it 4-2. Then, in a hectic finish, the score was extended decisively (killing off C of I's hopes) as the indomitable Hollway drove home the Ulster side's fifth goal from their 10th corner.
