The 30-year-old Maori, capped four times by New Zealand in 1994, made an immediate impression on new Wales coach Graham Henry courtesy of consistent club form and a Cardiff-born grandfather.

Sale's versatile full-back joins two other English Premiership players - Craig and Scott Quinell - while another eight come from Welsh rebels Cardiff and Swansea.

Scott Quinnell, poised to sign for Llanelli tomorrow, wins Henry's vote even though the English RFU could intervene later this week by rejecting his appeal against a 14-day suspension. Henry desperately wants him in the side, but there are contingency plans featuring blindside flanker Colin Charvis should Twickenham uphold their ban imposed when Quinnell was sent off for late-tackling England captain Lawrence Dallaglio during Richmond's victory over Wasps last month.

Swansea youngster Chris Anthony, who has started just two matches since breaking a leg last April, replaces injured Lions tight-head prop David Young. St Helens rugby league wing Anthony Sullivan does not earn an expected call-up however. James, Taylor and Charvis survive last summer's record 96-13 defeat against South Africa at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, although Wyatt, prop Darren Morris and scrum-half David Llewellyn went on as substitutes.

The squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Holland and Italy to be reduced to 26 on Thursday, when team to play Holland will also be named.

Niall Malone, the former Irish out-half, has joined Worcester from English Premiership One leaders Leicester. The 27-year-old has won three caps since making his Ireland debut five years ago.
