Honours even in open game

HONOURS were deservedly shared in a fast, open game at Oriel Park last night where all the goals came in the first half. The students took the lead in the 19th minute when a quickly taken free by Jason Colwell was headed to the net by Robert Griffin.

Dundalk hit back four minutes later with a scrappy goal, Joe Gallen dispossessing UCD goalkeeper, Seamus Kelly, after Ray Campbell had crossed into the box. The home side went in front in the 26th minute when a well taken free on the right by Joe Hanrahan was headed in from close range by Gallen again.

A quick break by Jason Sherlock caught the Dundalk defence napping for the UCD equaliser in the 36th minute, which was finished to the net from close range by Colwell.

Dundalk had the better of the exchanges in the second half with Hanrahan attacking well down the left, and Campbell causing trouble to the UCD defence on the right but the nearest they came to a score was a header that shaved the bar from Fintan McConville.
