Tennis: Tim Henman offered token resistance as Lleyton Hewitt followed up his San Jose triumph with victory in the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells yesterday.

Hewitt won 6-1 6-2 for the 14th title of his still fledgling career, as Henman's bid to win the biggest title of his career ended in bitter disappointment.

CYCLING: In-form rider Mark Scanlon won the first round of the French South-East regional championship series on Saturday, breaking clear towards the end of the Les Monts de Luberon race and finishing over a minute clear of second-placed Vassili Iniokhin, writes Shane Stokes.

Scanlon's Irish team-mate, Tommy Evans, was fourth, one place ahead of fellow VC La Pomme rider Martial Ricci-Poggi, handing the Marseilles squad the lead in the series.

At home, Eddie O'Donoghue got revenge for last week's defeat by Philip Cassidy when he outsprinted the Cycleways rider to win the Carrick Challenge Cup. David McCann returned from a lingering ligament problem to take the St Patrick's Day race in Downpatrick, while veteran rider Tosh Lavery was first across the line in the Dublin Drogheda handicap race.

BASKETBALL: Waterford's 101-80 victory over Star of the Sea provided the perfect ending to their perfect ESB Superleague season, writes Ian O'Riordan. The packed WIT Sports Hall on Saturday night then witnessed the official presentation of the title trophy, the first in the club's history.

As a game, too, it was a night to remember. Mike Keohane landed an incredible 12 of 17 from the three-point range to end the game with 40 points. And the result went some way towards avenging the cup defeat to the Belfast club earlier in the season.

Waterford took control from the outset, hitting nine three-pointers in the opening quarter Incredibly, all 18 players scored.

Elsewhere, UCD Marian's 114-92 win over Sligo helped keep them in the hunt for the final place in next weekend's top-eight national tournament, while Notre Dame's 97-85 loss to Tralee Tigers ended their hopes of qualification.
