Tennis: Tim Henman avenged his Australian Open defeat at the hands of Jonas Bjorkman but Sweden fought back to share the spoils after the first day of the Davis Cup tie in Birmingham.

Henman held his nerve in a nerve-wracking opening contest with Bjorkman coming back from 4-1 down in the fourth set to seal a 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

It went some way to making up for his straight sets defeat by Bjorkman in the fourth round in Melbourne, and gave Britain a 1-0 lead as they try to advance beyond the first round for the first time since 1986.

But British number two Greg Rusedski then found Thomas Enqvist in inspired form, the world number 24 winning 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to level the match.

Rusedski wasted a number of break points before the opening set culminated in a tie-break, Enqvist racing into a 3-0 lead and eventually taking it 7-3.

The second set also required a tie-break with Enqvist playing the better tennis but Rusedski's serve keeping him out of serious trouble.

Enqvist pounced on a short second serve from Rusedski with a backhand winner down the line giving him a mini-break early on, but Rusedski got back on terms by forcing the Swede to net a backhand.

But Enqvist, the 1999 Australian Open runner-up, was not to be denied, another brilliant return winner allowing him to serve out for the set, taking the tie-break 7-5 for a two-set lead.

The pressure from Enqvist was relentless and Rusedski's serve eventually cracked under the strain Enqvist had no trouble completing an impressive victory to level the match.
