Yugoslavia regained the lead in Group Eight with an emphatic 4-2 win over Macedonia, completing the double over their southern neighbours in the space of three days.

Savo Milosevic scored one of the quickest goals in international soccer when he put the visitors ahead only 10 seconds after the kick-off.

The match was effectively over after 38 minutes, as Dejan Stankovic, Ljubinko Drulovic and a Boban Babunski own-goal gave Yugoslavia an insurmountable 4-0 lead at half-time. The visitors sat back on their lead in the second half and allowed Macedonia to salvage some pride through Artem Saciri and Sasa Ciric. Yugoslavia defeated Macedonia 3-1 at home on Sunday.
