Tiger Woods voted player of the year on US PGA Tour

World number one Tiger Woods has been voted the PGA Tour's player of the year for the 11th time in his career following five wins this season.

PGA Tour members who played in at least 12 official money events in 2013 were eligible to vote following the conclusion of the Tour Championship on Sunday, with Woods topping the poll ahead of US Masters champion Adam Scott, British Open champion Phil Mickelson, FedEx Cup winner Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar.

Jordan Spieth, 20, who started the year 809th in the world rankings but is now 21st after winning the John Deere Classic aged 19 and finishing joint second to Stenson in the Tour Championship, was voted rookie of the year.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour, my congratulations to Tiger and Jordan for their impressive performances in 2013,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said.

“Tiger’s five wins came against some of the strongest fields in golf, including The Players (Championship) and two World Golf Championships, while Jordan’s rookie season was historic in terms of his accomplishments for a player just 20 years old.

“The member vote reflects the respect their peers have for both players.”

Woods has a total of 79 career victories on the PGA Tour, three shy of Sam Snead’s all-time record of 82.
