Dustin Johnson named PGA Tour’s player of the year

US Open champion Dustin Johnson has been voted the PGA Tour's player of the year after a hugely successful season.

As well as claiming his first major title at Oakmont, Johnson won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on his next appearance and the BMW Championship during the FedEx Cup play-offs.

That victory took the 32-year-old to the top of the FedEx Cup standings, but he missed out on the overall title and 10 million US dollars bonus after Rory McIlroy won the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.

"On behalf of the PGA Tour, my congratulations to Dustin Johnson for his outstanding play on big stages during the 2015-16 season," PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said.

“His hard work on the golf course and in the gym paid off with the finest season of his career, and the member vote reflects the respect his peers have for him.”

PGA Tour members who played in at least 15 official money events were eligible to vote, with McIlroy, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson the other contenders.
