Goals prove major plus for minors

A potent mix of superb goal scoring and goal stopping earned Tyrone their 17th Ulster minor football title at Clones.

A potent mix of superb goal scoring and goal stopping earned Tyrone their 17th Ulster minor football title at Clones.

Martin Penrose and Barry Mulligan applied the expert finishes, while goalkeeper John Devine made two stunning saves, one of them from a penalty, late in the game to thwart Monaghan's late revival.

Tyrone recovered from a slow start to dominate the opening quarter, and when full forward Martin Penrose blasted home a brilliant 16th-minute goal, they led by 1-6 to 0-3.

A spectacular Sean Kavanagh point was complemented by two scores from debutant Gerard Toner, and while Monaghan managed to stay in touch with points from Paul Finlay and Fintan Kindlon, they lacked the sparkle that set the Tyrone teenagers apart.

Their star quality was underlined by a superb individual point by Penrose, but late scores from Finlay and skipper Gary McBride left just three points between the sides at the break, Tyrone ahead by 1-7 to 0-7.

Penrose sent Mulligan through for a bullet-like second goal nine minutes into the second half, but Monaghan staged a courageous fightback, and Ashley White and Kindlon had cut the deficit to four points when they were awarded a penalty on 65 minutes.

But Devine saved superbly from White, and later pulled off a second match-winning stop from Francis Markey.

Tyrone grew in strength, and sealed it with later points from Toner and Penrose.
