HOCKEY: The University of Ulster's Aaron Gill helped himself to a remarkable 11-goal haul in his team's 9-0 and 4-0 victories over the Royal College of Surgeons and UCC on the opening day of the Intervarsities at Belfield yesterday, reports Mary Hannigan. The Instonians forward scored a hat-trick against UCC in UU's first pool game before going on a one-man goal spree against RCSI, scoring eight.
DCU, last year's runners-up, also took maximum points from their Pool B games, beating RCSI 9-0 and UCC 3-1 (David Bane was their top scorer with five goals). Mauritius Cup holders Queens were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts UCD in Pool A while Trinity finally broke the University of Limerick's resistance, scoring three goals in the second half of their game to win 4-1.
In the women's Chilean Cup Trinity buried memories of their 5-0 league defeat by UCD a fortnight ago when they drew 0-0 with their old rivals yesterday but they were denied victory over UU later in the day when tournament director Jimmy O'Connor ruled that their "winning" goal had been scored after the final whistle. The University of Limerick top Pool A after beating RCSI 4-0 and drawing 0-0 with NUIG.
CRICKET: Shaun Pollock claimed the first 10-wicket haul of his Test career to inspire South Africa to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over India in Bloemfontein yesterday.
The Proteas skipper, who took four for 91 in the tourists' first innings, snared six for 56 as India collapsed to 237 all out in their second innings to surrender the first Test.
Set 54 to win, South Africa saw Herschelle Gibbs depart quickly but Gary Kirsten (30 not out) and Jacques Kallis (21no) saw them reach their target without further alarms.
Pollock, who finished with match figures of 10 for 147 off 48.1 overs, was delighted at achieving his personal landmark.
"It has taken a while," he said. "I have come close a few times before so it is nice to finally get there after 50-odd Tests."
Having reached lunch on 190 for five, a lead of just six, the tourists saw Virender Sehwag (31), Anil Kumble (4), Deep Dasgupta (4), Zaheer Khan (0) and Javagal Srinath (16) depart in quick succession.
Earlier in the day, Jacques Kallis claimed his 100th Test victim when he took the prize wicket of Sachin Tendulkar.
