Newcastle West win Limerick senior football championship with ease

It’s just the third time in their history that Newcastle West have lifted the title

Newcastle West 2-10 Drom/Broadford 0-09

For only the third time in their 128 year history Newcastle West won the Limerick senior football championship in emphatic manner at Kilmallock.

It was their first win in 23 years and it was fully deserved against their next door neighbours, and favourites, Drom/Broadford who never got into serious contention.

Newcastle West, coached by Donegal man, Anton McFadden, got off to a flying start and led by 0-5 to nil after thirteen minutes before Killian Phair pointed a Drom/Broadford free.

But within a minute Jamie Lee created the chance to give long serving Stephen Kelly the opening he needed to crash home a goal.

It took Drom/Broadford 22 minutes to get their first score from play, a Seanie Buckley point, but by halftime Newcastle West led by 1-8 to 0-4.

Drom/Bfroadford had the first three points of the second half Derry McCarthy, Phair (free) and Pat Donnelly (free) but that was as close as it got and Lee's goal after 64 minutes wrapped it up for Newcastle West.
