Tradition counted for nought at windswept New Ross yesterday as first-time finalists Fethard wore down five-times champions Gusserane, their next-door neighbours, to win the Wexford senior football title. an Dunphy levelled the scores for the fifth time 13 minutes into the half; but Fethard finished the stronger and points by Dunphy, Tubritt and two by Jim Byrne, left it 1-9 to 1-5 in favour of the sea-siders.

Gusserane fought bravely to the end, Seamus Ryan hit the post and Shay Keevans pointed a free with the last kick of the game.
