COLM FARRELL of the Navan club won the Meath Grand Prix over four laps of 16 miles at Navan yesterday when he swooped late in the sprint to the line to lead in Mark Lyttle with Joe Fenlon third. With the distance reduced it was very competitive all the way and the leading group of 10 of the 80 starters split on a hill with five miles to go. Ciaran Power, David Hourigan, Brendan Doherty, Michael Reilly and Deais Easton went on, but as they were watching each other, preparing for the final effort, those they had left behind came back up and surprised them with Farrell leading the charge past. There was an unusual outcome to the juniors race as James McMaster and Derek Finnagan sprinted it out and the officials were unable to separate them and ruled it as a dead-heat.
At Banbridge on Saturday local hero Tommy Evans proved best in the West Down Grand Prix, the third of 10 events to count in the Callcard classic league.
