AUSTRALIA'S Steve Elkington ran away from the best field in US PGA Tour history, when he cruised to a seven shot victory in the $3.5 million Players Championship at Sawgrass, Florida, yesterday.

Elkington, who also won the event in 1991, shot a three under a par 69 - his fourth straight round in the 60s - and finished at 16 under, 272, seven shots in front of, Scott Hoch. Elkington led after each round and collected the first prize of $630,000.

The 1995 PGA Champion vaulted over Mark O'Meara to the top of the money list with $984,400 in just four events. He captured the Doral Open three weeks ago and joined O'Meara as the only multiple winners on Tour this year.

Colin Montgomerie finished joint seventh - his second top 10 finish in four starts in America this season - by shooting a closing 73.
