Dundalk deservedly booked their passage into the third round of the Carlsberg FAI Cup after they defeated Galway United in a second-round replay at Terryland Park last night.

Dundalk dominated the opening half and on 17 minutes, Jonathan Prizeman hit a 30-yard free kick which was met by the in-rushing Martin Reilly, who headed the ball wide from close range at the left-hand post.

Then with 23 minutes gone, Kieran Kavanagh blasted the ball over from 12 yards from a corner taken by man of the match Prizeman.

United's best chance of the half came two minutes later when Michael Quirke had a left-foot volley from 20 yards which was stopped by John Connolly, the Dundalk goalkeeper.

The goal came after 29 minutes after James Keddy was fouled near the corner flag. Prizeman's free kick was met by former St Patrick Athletic player Martin Reilly, who headed home unimpeded from six yards as a slack defence stood by.

Galway United upped their level of performance for much of the second half, forcing a series of corners. This was due to the introduction of Bobby Ryan and latterly, Alan Murphy.

However, the home challenge suffered a blow when Billy Clery was sent off for a second bookable offence after he had fouled Donal Broughan.
