Drogheda still seek home win

Drogheda United came close to recording their first home league win of the season at United Park last night

Drogheda United came close to recording their first home league win of the season at United Park last night. The match had entered stoppage time when Darren O'Keeffe, who missed a great chance just two minutes earlier, sent a looping header towards the top corner of the Waterford net.

But the Drogheda midfielder watched in agony as Waterford keeper Michael Devine scrambled the ball away to earn his side a deserved point.

The home side took the lead after just six minutes when a Derek Thornton cross was met by Mark Revins who drilled the ball low into the Waterford net.

Damian Maher came close to making it 2-0 a minute later with a powerful downward header which was cleared off the line by Alan Kirby.

But the homeside, despite their early dominance, got careless at the back and were severely punished on the half hour when Kirby drove a 25-yard free to the top righthand corner.

Neither side created any other real chances of note until the game entered its final phase when Waterford's Karl Gannon crashed a header off the underside of the crossbar. However, neither manager can have any complaints at the result.
