WHISPER it softly, but Down could yet be a good bet for the Ulster senior football championship title. Five wins on the trot Cavan, Monaghan, Fermanagh and Galway were their victims before yesterday have improved morale and fuelled ambitions.
Yesterday's Dr McKenna cup final triumph over Armagh not only marks the return of some silverware, but it also signals an important stepping stone in the championship build up. Armagh, fragile at midfield and punchless up front, were unable to cope with the solid authority of Conor Deegan and Gregory McCartan, while John Treanor, Mickey Linden and James McCartan wove intricate patterns in attack.
Down led by 0-8 to 1-3 at halftime, Armagh's goal having arrived fortuitously after Neil Collins mis handled an Oisin McConville free. Down held sway in the second half and their defence coped effectively with Armagh's breakaway raids.
Down were inspired by Treanor's skills and his accuracy, while defensively they conceded little with Brian Burns and Paul Higgins resolute in the full back line.
Martin Toye and Ger Houlahan worked hard in the Armagh attack, but were unable to make any real headway against a side that is now approaching peak fitness as they prepare to face Donegal in the Ulster championship opener in a month's time.
