GOLF/News: Ireland's Colm Moriarty added the New South Wales Amateur Championship to last week's New South Wales Medal Championship when beating James Nitties from Charlestown Golf Club 7 and 5 in the 36 hole final at The Lakes Golf Club , Sydney, yesterday.

In winning the title, the Athlone player became only the second non-Australian player in the long history of the event to win the amateur crown. New Zealand's Michael Campbell, the reigning European Open champion, took the title in 1993.

In the semi final Moriarty had to come from three down after nine to beat New Zealand's Matthew Holden 5 and 3.

Moriarty went to lunch one up after winning the 18th and made sure of a place in the final when he went five up after 28 holes.

Hopes of an All-Ireland final disappeared at the semi-final stage when Birr's Justin Kehoe, the world universities champion, went down 5 and 3 to Nitties.

This early-season double will further Moriarty's quest to be selected on the Walker Cup team that defends the trophy against the United States at Ganton in September.
