IRELAND lost their final Benson & Hedges game of the season to Surrey at Eglinton by five wickets but it was a vastly improved performance from last week's game at Castle Avenue.
From the horrors of 17 for 5 in the 12th over, Ireland recovered to total 196 for 8 with Lisburn's Neil Doak scoring an unbeaten 84 off 121 balls with eight fours and three sixes. He dominated a seventh-wicket partnership of 64 with Ryan Engleson and added 70 in the last 10 overs with Alan Rutherford.
Derek Heasley, called in to replace the injured Peter Gillespie, made an impressive debut, scoring 36 and then taking a stunning catch for the wicket of Graham Thorpe when Surrey chased the target.
The freescoring Alistair Brown was tamed by Mark Patterson after just 17 deliveries for 24.
