Blackrock are considering their position following an incident during Saturday's AIB League Division One match against DLSP at Stradbrook in which their tighthead prop, Gary Halpin, suffered a horrific injury that almost severed his ear. It is understood the damage was caused by a boot.

The club expressed their dismay and anger that the incident may not have been accidental - a view supported by several players. Last night the club were studying a video before deciding on a course of action.

They were also seeking clarification about how soon they must cite a player. The IRFU laws stipulate that the citing must take place within 48 hours. The incident took place 12 minutes into the game when Halpin carried a ball into contact and was left lying on the ground. Prominent eye surgeon Michael Browne was called from the crowd to attend Halpin, and eventually the 34-year-old was assisted to an ambulance. He was transferred to the Blackrock Clinic immediately and had about 40 internal and external stitches inserted to secure the ear.

Halpin is extremely upset and angered by the incident. He confirmed he is prepared to sit back and allow due process between the clubs to reconcile the matter, and he would welcome, if necessary, the intervention of the IRFU.

DLSP coach Phil Werahiko was appalled when informed of the incident yesterday and rang Halpin to discuss the matter and offer his sympathy. Werahiko and team manager Conor McCormack were instrumental in making available to Blackrock the DLSP video of the match, the only one taken on the day.

Blackrock's rugby committee will meet tonight and will be in a better position to decide on the course of action having viewed the video.
