Former Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland international Peter Farrell has died in Dublin after a long illness.

Capped 28 times for the Republic and seven times for the North, he scored in Ireland's 2-0 defeat of England at Goodison Park in 1949, the first time England were beaten at home. Farrell won two FAI Cup medals with Shamrock Rovers and captained Everton for seven seasons. When his playing career ended, Farrell had spells as manager with Tranmere Rovers and Sligo Rovers.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel, and four daughters. Removal to Foxrock Church this evening at 6.0. Funeral after 11.30 Mass tomorrow.

The Daily Telegraph reports today that BSKYB'S takeover bid for Manchester United has been turned down by the monopolies an Mergers Commission (MMC). Sources close to the Department for Trade and Industry were quoted as saying that the MMC had found that the satellite broadcaster's ú625 million agreed take-over bid was not in the public interest.
