How the Irish competitors fared yesterday

Shooting: Men’s Trap

Derek Burnett finished 27th after the final two rounds in the men’s trap. The Longford man twice hit 23 out of 25 targets but only the top six in the standings progress to this afternoon’s final.

Dublin sailors Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan suffered a hugely disappointing days sailing, finishing 25th and 27th in todays two races in the Mens 470 class. They are now bottom of the standings with two races to go.

Sailing: Laser radial

Annalise Murphy finished fifth in the medal race to agonisingly finish in fourth overall. The 22-year-old Dubliner saw her three rivals, China’s Lijia Xu, Marit Bouwmeester (Holland) and Evi van Acker (Belgium) take the first three places and the gold, silver and bronze medals in that order.

Boxing: Women’s lightweight

Katie Taylor beat Nastasha Jonas 26-15 to guarantee a bronze medal at least. She produced a powerful performance against a very spirited and gutsy opponent to move into the semi-finals of the lightweight division. The ExCel Arena was rocking to the strains of Irish and British voices urging on two great boxers, who responded with a cracking encounter; a wonderful advertisement for the sport.

Sailing: 49er

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern will not contest the 49er medal race after finishing outside the top 10. The pair finished 16th in both races yesterday to drop back to 14th overall.

Equestrian: Individual showjumping

Cian O’Connor failed to qualify for the final of the individual show jumping. The Irish rider knocked down three fences during his round (12 faults) and that combined with the eight faults he carried into the third round left him precariously placed.

As first reserve, he still has a chance of making the Olympic final if any of todays qualifying horses fail to pass the vet check before tomorrow.
