THE PREMIERSHIP has been advised to set up its own television service when its deal with BSkyB expires in 2001.

In an interim report sent to clubs a fortnight ago, Oliver and Ohlbaum, the media consultancy firm hired to advise the league on pay per view television, says the £670 million that BSkyB is paying the clubs to show live Premiership football over the next four years represents only half the real value of the rights.

The consultancy calculates top flight football will be worth £1.3 billion to the satellite broadcaster over the next four years and says that if the league is to benefit fully from its popularity, it should consider setting up a dedicated Premier League pay TV service.
