SPORTS DIGEST:RUGBY WORLD CUP: England World Cup winner Mike Catt will make his final appearance for London Irish in next Saturday's Guinness Premiership clash against Northampton.
Catt, 39 later this year, joined Irish from Bath in 1994. He will continue to develop his coaching career with the Exiles.
Catt won 75 England caps, including playing in the 2003 and 2007 World Cup finals, and he featured for the British and Irish Lions.
During his playing career with Irish, Catt made almost 100 appearances at fly-half or centre.
“I’ve been fortunate to have had an enjoyable and successful career as a player at club and international level,” he said.
“London Irish has given me the opportunity to make the transition from playing to coaching, and the time is right for me to focus full-time on that role.
“I hope to help the club maintain the progress it has made in recent seasons.”
Del Potro undergoes wrist surgery
TENNIS: Martin del Potro had surgery on his right wrist yesterday.
The world number five has not appeared on the ATP World Tour since January as he battles the injury, and has now chosen to have surgery to correct the problem.
“I have tried all season to avoid surgery by trying different treatments but, evidently, the injury was more serious,” said the Argentinian.
“When I arrived in the United States, Dr (Richard) Berger did tests when I was on court and did different studies to specifically locate the points where I felt pain. From there, he made the decision to operate.
“As you will all understand, this is not a happy moment in my life. But I’m used to battling through adversity and I have the strength to come through this.”
Calzaghe considering a comeback
BOXING: Joe Calzaghe is considering a comeback to fight Bernard Hopkins again according to Golden Boy Promotions chief Richard Schaefer.
The Welsh boxer retired in February 2009 with an undefeated 46-fight record behind him, but there has been talk of him returning to the ring.
Calzaghe beat Hopkins courtesy of a split decision at light-heavyweight in his penultimate fight, but it was far from a satisfactory performance.
Calzaghe’s final fight was an impressive dismantling of Roy Jones Jr in 2008, but both he and Hopkins are said to be keen on a rematch.
“Joe has expressed interest and so has Bernard,” said Schaefer. “We will try to make it happen in the autumn.”
Hopkins has continued to fight in Calzaghe’s absence, with unanimous points decisions against Enrique Ornelas and Jones Jnr his last two fights.
