The international careers of Andy Townsend, Ray Houghton and Tony Cascarino hang in the balance after the Republic of Ireland's elimination. Within minutes of Belgium's win, Townsend said he was retiring from international football. Then, having spoken with Mick McCarthy and taken on board the advice of Jack Charlton, the man who recruited him to the Irish cause, he appeared to change his mind before leaving the stadium.

"I've spoken with Andy, as well as Ray and Cas, and they've all made it clear that they will be available if needed," said McCarthy. "It's been a very moving night for everybody and they may need more time to think their positions through."

Charlton said: "Looking at the way Andy played this evening, I think he can go on for another two years."

"Mick's asked me to stay on for a little bit longer and I've agreed," said Townsend yesterday. "But I don't really see myself taking part in the European qualifiers."

It was a tear-stained end to an emotional roller-coaster and Houghton was feeling the strain.

"We've just been knocked out of the World Cup and it's not the time to start making announcements. But I've already told Mick that if he thinks I can be of use to him, I will go on. That's the position as of now, but I'm not about to start holding my breath on my next Ireland appearance."
